Step 7 · Fraction and decimal arithmetic topics
Find a fraction of a whole number, multiply two fractions with an area model, and predict whether a product will be bigger or smaller than the number you started with.
A fraction of a number
of 12 means: cut 12 into 3 equal parts and take one. 12 ÷ 3 = 4. of 12 is two of those parts: 8.
"Of" means multiply: of 12 is .
Example: A fraction of an amount
What is of 20?
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4: one fifth of 20 is 4.
- Three fifths is 3 × 4 = 12.
Answer12
Fraction times fraction
To find of , take half of three fourths. In an area model, shade one way and take of it the other way; the overlap is the answer.
Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators: .
Example: Fraction times fraction
What is × ?
- Numerators: 2 × 4 = 8.
- Denominators: 3 × 5 = 15.
Answer
The same rule gives the area of a rectangle with fraction sides: one m by m has an area of square meter.
Multiplying makes it bigger or smaller
Multiplying by a number bigger than 1 makes a number bigger. Multiplying by a fraction less than 1 makes it smaller: × 8 = 6, which is less than 8.
| Multiply 10 by | Answer | Compared with 10 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Smaller | |
| 1 | 10 | The same |
| 15 | Bigger |
