Topic 5 of 8
Making ten
Step 2 · Numbers to 100 topics
Split numbers into two parts, find the pairs that make 10, and use a ten frame to see how many more make 10.
Breaking numbers into two parts
Any number can be split into two parts. 5 can be 4 and 1, 3 and 2, 2 and 3, or 1 and 4. The parts always add back up to the number.
Pairs that make 10
Some pairs come up again and again: the pairs that make 10. Knowing them by heart makes adding faster.
| Number | Add this to make 10 |
|---|---|
| 1 | 9 |
| 2 | 8 |
| 3 | 7 |
| 4 | 6 |
| 5 | 5 |
| 6 | 4 |
| 7 | 3 |
| 8 | 2 |
| 9 | 1 |
Your fingers show these pairs. Hold up 7 fingers: 3 fingers are down. 7 and 3 make 10.
Using a ten frame
A ten frame has 10 spaces. Fill some with counters. The empty spaces show how many more you need to make 10.
- counters
- spaces to fill
Example: How many more
